Public English programs
IMAT preparation matters most for public English-taught Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary programs listed in the annual MUR call.

The IMAT exam is the entrance test for many public English-taught Medicine and Dentistry programs in Italy. This page keeps the basics in one place: who needs it, what is tested, how scoring works, and how to prepare without jumping between random resources.
Last content check: May 2026. Baseline: completed MUR 2025/2026 English-language admission decree. Always confirm the active call before registering.
IMAT is commonly used as shorthand for Italy's English-language admission test for public medical programs. In the latest checked 2025/2026 MUR decree, the test covered admission to English-taught Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Dental Prosthodontics and Veterinary Medicine.
The exam is competitive because your result is used for ranking and seat allocation. It is not just a Biology and Chemistry test: a strong candidate also needs reading precision, logic, problem solving, Physics, Maths and the discipline to perform under time pressure.
Public English-taught Medicine and Dentistry options are planned around the national English-language admission test.
The questions are in English, but the application, ranking and enrollment logic follow Italian official procedures.
Format, date, registration and seat tables can change, so official MUR and university notices matter every year.
You should plan for IMAT preparation if your target is public English-taught Medicine, Dentistry or, based on the latest checked decree, Veterinary Medicine in Italy. This includes universities such as Pavia, Milan IMS, Bari, Messina, Sapienza, Siena Dentistry, Milano-Bicocca and other public programs listed in the latest official seat table.
You should not assume IMAT applies to every Italian medical university. Private universities often run their own admissions: Humanitas uses the Humanitas admissions process, Cattolica has its own test, San Raffaele publishes a private test, and Campus Bio-Medico or UniCamillus can set separate calls.
Eligibility is not only about passing the test. Students also need to check their candidate category, school qualification, documents and whether their target university uses the public IMAT process or a private admission test.

Check whether you apply as EU/equivalent or non-EU resident abroad. Seats, ranking logic and thresholds can differ.
Humanitas, Cattolica, San Raffaele, Campus Bio-Medico and UniCamillus usually publish their own calls and tests.
Your school-leaving qualification, ID, pre-enrollment, visa and enrollment documents depend on your status and university.
IMAT cutoffs are useful, but only if you compare the right things. A cutoff is the score of the last admitted candidate for a specific university, program, year and candidate category. It is not a universal target score.
Before you judge your chances from an old cutoff table, check whether the data matches your situation. The wrong comparison can make a safe choice look impossible, or a risky choice look safer than it is.
EU/equivalent and non-EU resident abroad scores should not be mixed.
Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary places can have different competition.
A score can be strong for one city and weak for another.
Seat numbers, test difficulty and applicant strength change every cycle.
Registration is usually a short official window, then the process moves into test day, ranking and enrollment. In the checked 2025/2026 cycle, public English-taught registration opened on 2 September 2025 and closed on 9 September 2025. Treat that as context, not as a future deadline.
Use the annual MUR decree to confirm the test date, format, available places, thresholds, candidate categories and official attachments.
For the checked 2025/2026 English test, registration was handled through Universitaly during a short September window.
Keep public IMAT university choices separate from private university applications, because private admissions can use different tests and deadlines.
After the exam, watch official ranking, enrollment, pre-enrollment and visa instructions instead of relying on old screenshots.
The latest completed official format checked for this page is the MUR 2025/2026 English-language test. It assigned 100 minutes for 60 multiple-choice questions, with a maximum score of 90 points.
In that decree, the minimum eligibility threshold for EU candidates and equivalent non-EU candidates was 20 points. For non-EU candidates resident abroad, the decree used a different rule: candidates needed a score above zero. Ranking rules, minimum thresholds and seat categories must always be rechecked in the active annual decree.
| Area | Questions | Official focus | Preparation focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading and General Knowledge | 4 | English written-text comprehension, abstract or specialist vocabulary, cohesion, inference, general knowledge and public-context topics. | Train short-passage reading, source evaluation, careful inference and fast elimination of attractive wrong answers. |
| Logical Reasoning and Problems | 5 | Completing reasoning coherently from verbal or symbolic premises, including abstract cases and problem situations. | Build reusable patterns for assumptions, conclusions, conditionals, numerical reasoning and time-controlled problem solving. |
| Biology | 23 | Cell biology, genetics, evolution, biotechnology, human anatomy and physiology, bioenergetics and core living-system chemistry. | Prioritize high-yield concept maps, diagrams, human physiology links, genetics practice and active recall over passive rereading. |
| Chemistry | 15 | Matter, gases, atomic structure, periodicity, bonding, inorganic chemistry, stoichiometry, solutions, equilibrium, redox, acids and bases, organic chemistry. | Practise calculations until automatic, then combine them with theory questions on bonding, pH, equilibrium and functional groups. |
| Physics and Maths | 13 | Algebra, functions, geometry, probability/statistics, measurement, mechanics, fluids, thermodynamics, electricity and electromagnetism. | Cover the formulas, but spend most practice time on units, graph reading, proportionality, word problems and mixed maths/physics drills. |

A good IMAT plan is simple: learn the theory, practise by topic, then train under time pressure. Students who only collect random questions often improve slowly because they do not know why they are missing points.
Start with a mixed test or topic audit. Mark every missed question by reason: knowledge gap, calculation, wording, timing or careless elimination.
Give Biology and Chemistry the biggest study blocks, while keeping Physics and Maths active with shorter regular sessions.
Use timed sets before full simulations. Learn when to solve, when to skip, when to calculate and when to leave an answer blank.
For every mistake, write the corrected rule or reasoning step. The goal is to fix the pattern that caused the miss.

Do not wait until your plan is perfect. Open a question set, time yourself, then use the result to decide what to study next.
Start with Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, logic or reading. Keep the set short and review every miss.
Train the 100-minute pace before you sit down for full mock exams.
Look at how IMAT questions are written, then practise the same thinking pattern again.
Use the score calculator after a mock or past paper so your next study block is based on real weak areas.
IMAT Mentor helps with structured science revision, exam-style practice, timed simulations, flashcards, progress tracking and clear Italy application context. It helps students turn the official syllabus into weekly study tasks.
Use exam-style questions to turn syllabus points into active recall and decision-making under pressure.
Build the stamina and timing habits needed for 60 questions in 100 minutes.
Use guided explanations and study support to understand why an answer is right, not only what the answer is.
The platform does not replace official MUR, Universitaly or university instructions. Its role is to help students prepare seriously instead of trying to cram for a competitive national exam at the end.
For dates, registration, test centers, rankings and enrollment, official pages beat every preparation website. This page uses the sources below for its current factual baseline.
