IMAT Biology preparation
A clear guide to the Biology topics you need for the IMAT, plus how to practise them.
Know what Biology topics can come up.
Practise them before test day.
The IMAT Biology section can include cells, genetics, DNA, evolution, biotechnology, anatomy, physiology and energy topics. You do not need to be perfect on day one. You need a plan that helps you learn the topics and keep testing yourself.
Start with the syllabus, then use practice questions to see what is actually improving.

๐งฌWhy Biology matters
Biology is one of the most important parts of the IMAT. In the 2025 English paper, Biology had 23 questions out of 60, so it can make a real difference to your final score.
The subject is not impossible, but it is wide. You need cell biology, genetics, DNA, evolution, biotechnology, anatomy, physiology and energy topics. That is why random studying usually feels messy.
A better way to prepare is simple: know the IMAT Biology syllabus, learn the main ideas in normal language, then practise IMAT Biology questions until the wording starts to feel familiar.
๐Biology topics to cover
The official IMAT Biology syllabus is the best checklist. Use it to avoid random studying and to make sure you are not missing a whole area.
๐งซ Cells and molecules
- Chemistry of living beings, biomolecules, weak interactions and enzymes
- Cell theory, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, organelles and viruses
- Cell membranes, transport mechanisms and cellular structures
- Cell cycle, mitosis, meiosis, chromosomes and reproduction
๐งฌ Genetics and DNA
- Mendelian genetics and inheritance models
- DNA, RNA, replication, genetic code and protein synthesis
- Human genetics, pedigrees and inherited disease
- Chromosome changes and mutation types
๐ฑ Evolution and biotechnology
- Natural selection, artificial selection and evolutionary theory
- The genetic basis of evolution
- Recombinant DNA and biotechnology
- PCR and common applications
โก Human body and energy
- Animal and human tissues, organs, systems and homeostasis
- ATP, enzymes and redox reactions
- Photosynthesis, glycolysis and aerobic respiration
- Fermentation and energy transfer

๐ฌHow to study Biology
Do not just read notes and hope everything sticks. IMAT Biology questions are short, but they often test whether you really understand a process, a word or a small detail. A good routine is: learn one topic, test yourself, review the mistakes, then mix it with older topics so you do not forget them.
Study routine
- Learn the topic first: start with the basic idea before you try harder IMAT Biology practice questions.
- Explain it without fancy wording: if you can explain mitosis, DNA replication or an organ system simply, you probably understand it better.
- Practise right away: use topic questions after each study block so you can see what is clear and what still needs work.
- Review every wrong answer: do not only check the correct option. Ask why your answer was wrong and what clue you missed.
๐งญWhy it affects your score
- There are many Biology questions, with 23 questions in the latest checked official format.
- It connects to Chemistry, especially in biomolecules, enzymes, redox reactions and energy topics.
- Many mistakes are fixable, because students often lose points on vocabulary, process order or basic genetics logic.

๐ฏWeekly Biology plan
If you are starting now, do not try to learn everything in one week. First check what you already know. Then work through the syllabus in blocks, such as cells, genetics, evolution, physiology and bioenergetics.
After each block, do practice questions and keep a short mistake list. This is usually more useful than rereading the same notes again and again.
What to do each week
- Study 2-3 Biology topics, then explain each one in your own words.
- Do IMAT Biology practice questions, especially on the topics you just studied.
- Review old mistakes, so the same weak point does not keep coming back.
- Use mixed sets later, once the main syllabus areas are not completely new anymore.
